The theme of this issue of Matters Magazine is sustainability, a term derived from the Latin word sustinere. The definitions of sustainability vary depending on the source: the Oxford English Dictionary describes it as the capacity to be upheld or defended as valid, correct, or true. Dictionary.com focuses on the environmental aspect, emphasising the importance of not being harmful and thereby supporting long-term ecological balance. The American Merriam-Webster dictionary simply defines it as the ability to be sustained.
According to the Cambridge Dictionary, sustainability is about being able to continue over a period of time. This definition resonates deeply with me as it spans all aspects of life and business. It calls on us to bear the weight of our decisions with grace and responsibility, to recognise the interconnectedness of life, and to strive to uphold what is true in our interactions with each other and the world.
But what does sustainability look like in practice? How do we embody this principle in our daily actions, both personal and professional?
Sustainability involves making eco-friendly choices and creating businesses that consider their long-term impact on society and the environment. It also means building relationships based on honesty and integrity and making decisions that consider the wellbeing of our families, communities, businesses, and humanity. On a personal note, I can honestly say that over the last few months, I could not have sustained myself without the support, trust, and love of my family, friends, and business partner.
We explore all these dimensions of sustainability. Our cover story on Bhavna Megh delves into integrating transformational change as a means to sustain; Adam Cursio shares his insights on balancing family, business, and personal passions to create sustainable joy; and Elvis and Bianca Pereira discuss their philosophy on developing lasting relationships with clients and within their team, which they believe will enable Lauxen Cleaning Solutions to continue over time.
We also feature the personal journeys of individuals who prioritise long-term welfare over short-term gains, showcasing how sustainable practices can fundamentally shape lives and businesses alike.
As you turn these pages, I invite you to reflect on the sustainability of your own actions. Are they genuinely sustainable or merely superficial measures? How can you integrate true sustainability into your life and business?
Thank you for supporting Matters Magazine in our quest for sustainability. May this issue inspire deeper reflection on what sustainability really means and how it can be authentically practised in every facet of your existence.
